The Foot & Ankle Institute is proud to welcome Dr. Ryan Peterson.

Dr. Peterson and his family are coming to us from his residency in Colorado and will be residing in the Hurricane community. Dr. Peterson is a southern Utah native and is highly trained in all types of Foot & Ankle care and surgical treatments. We look forward to having him on our staff.

He will spend the majority of his time in Hurricane while also servicing the Mesquite and Cedar City communities.

Dr. Carl Van Gils was a featured lecturer of the Symposium on Advanced Wound Care

In April, Dr. Carl Van Gils of the Foot & Ankle Institute in St. George was invited as a guest lecturer for the Symposium on Advanced Wound Care at the Gaylord Palms Hotel in Orlando, Florida.

This was a prestigious opportunity and attendees included physicians, nurses, physical therapists, researchers, podiatrists, dietitians, and other health professionals involved in wound healing or wound care issues. The SAWC/WHS provides attendees who study and treat wounds with state-of-the-art reviews of clinical problems and research information.

Dr. Carl Van Gils joined the Foot and Ankle Institute in 1999 and is a board certified foot surgeon. Dr Van Gils is a Certified Wound Specialist and is the current Medical Director of the Wound Clinic at Dixie Regional Medical Center. He also trained at the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. While there he helped publish the results of the “Desert Foot” experience, one of the first nationally recognized multidisciplinary programs dedicated to limb salvage in the diabetic population.

Due to his vast expertise and leading research in wound care and wound care technology, Dr. Van Gils is a sought after lecturer on the diabetic foot both locally and internationally and has published in many peer-reviewed journals.

Shoes for Haiti- SUCCESS!

From February 1st to March 1st, we conducted a "Shoes for Haiti" drive. We set an ambitious goal of 1,000 pairs of shoes and worked with the Spectrum, Cherry Creek Radio, and Canyon Media to get the word out about our drive. It was a major success beyond our imagination.

Our final count came to MORE THAN DOUBLE our original goal.

We collected 2,302 pairs of shoes!

Thank you to all of the Southern Utah community for help.

Donation box at our St. George Location. It was rarely used since most donations were so generous they wouldn't fit in the box so we just took them to the back of the office.

This picture was taken after only 1 day of donations. We had no idea what a great response we would get.

Multiple church groups, seminary groups, and community groups ran their own drives in order to collect shoes and donate to ours.

We also want to thank all of our staff for the work they put into getting these shoes paired and boxed

so we could deliver them to the warehouse in Las Vegas.

A special huge thanks to Marilyn Norton. She took the collections upon herself and did a wonderful job in making sure they were boxed and ready for shipment. This drive never would have been the success it was without all of you!

Not even the doctors' desks were immune from the overflow of shoes.

All of these shoes were brand new and came as a donation to our Cedar City Office. Over 300 pairs of brand new shoes!

Couldn't fit them all in the back so we had to fill up the inside too!

The shoes were delivered around 11am on Saturday, March 6th.

We had a great response!

Our shoes will be boxed up like these and shipped to Alabama for sorting and cleaning.

Pretty much every box you can see in this picture is full of shoes

waiting to be shipped to the main warehouse in Alabama where they

sort, clean, repair, and renew shoes before sending them out to Haiti and

other devastated countries. I would imagine some of these will also be routed

to Chile to help with the devastation that has occurred there.

As of Thursday, March 4th, 1.7 million pairs of shoes had been shipped to Haiti,

with that amount or more still being sorted and cleaned for shipment. The response from

people has been amazing!

We want to thank the entire Southern Utah community for the generosity they have shown during this drive. We were happy to do our part and we were so grateful for all the generous donations.

DRMC Health Fair

On February 27th, the Foot & Ankle Institute participated in the Annual Dixie Regional Medical Center Health Fair. This year's fair was held in the nearly opened out patient building just east of the hospital. We were happy to see the number of people who showed up and we kept the doctors busy doing free screenings all morning. Check out some of the pictures from the event.

Comprehensive Diabetic Foot Exam (CDFE)

2010 is bringing some exciting additions for the Foot & Ankle Institute. For the past few months, our doctors have been working hard to implement a system that will allow them to be on the cutting edge of preventative care for our diabetic patients.

With this goal in mind, we have begun seeing patients for the Comprehensive Diabetic Foot Exams (CDFE). The goal of the CDFE is to find any changes in your feet as early as possible.

Nerve damage, poor circulation, and trouble fighting infections can make foot problems serious for people with diabetes. Nerve damage makes the skin and nails susceptible to injury. Healing is often slowed down or more difficult for people with diabetes. Skin breakdown can lead to chronic foot ulcers (long standing sores). In most cases, proper care of your feet can prevent ulcers and the risk of amputation.

Each diabetic patient is given a risk rating depending on their condition allowing the doctor to better monitor their progress and potential problems. This exam, although quick and simple to perform, is a crucial part to keeping our diabetic patients healthy.

Dr Carl Van Gils Medical Mission to Puebla, Mexico November 2-6, 2009

Dr. Carl Van Gils, the Medical Director of the DRMC Wound Clinic and physician of the Foot & Ankle Institute in St. George, Utah is taking his expertise of diabetic wound care to Puebla, Mexico to facilitate the growth of and educate physicians of diabetic wound care in that area. He will be there from November 2-6, 2009.

In conjunction with the Dixie Regional Medical Center Wound Clinic, the Foot & Ankle Institute, and the Hospital Universitario de Puebla’s Dr. Alberto Rivera, the goals of this medical mission are three fold:

To educate the community and medical staff about diabetic foot care, amputation prevention, and wound care.
To perform diabetic foot surgery.
To assist local doctors in wound care and in the establishment of wound care protocols for effective treatments to be carried on after Dr. Van Gils departure.

Dr. Van Gils is grateful for the opportunity to assist and educate the doctors of the Puebla, Mexico area in diabetic wound care and hopes to establish a long relationship in order to facilitate better care and opportunities for diabetic patients in that area.

On September 24-25, 2009, Dr. Leon Reber of the Foot & Ankle Institute in St. George was invited as a guest lecturer for the Northwest Podiatric Foundation Seminar held at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Lecturers were carefully selected by the foundation according to the physicians’ training and experience. This was a prestigious opportunity and attendees included podiatric foot & ankle surgeons from all over the nation.

Dr. Leon Reber joined the Foot and Ankle Institute in 2006 and is a specialist in foot and ankle trauma and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Reber completed his residency training in Seattle, Washington. During that time he received extensive training in foot and ankle reconstruction and trauma surgery. He was fortunate to spend a portion of his residency training at one of the top Level 1 Trauma Centers in the country, Harborview Medical Center. He had the opportunity to learn from several experts in the field of foot and ankle surgery, including Sigvard T. Hansen, and was exposed to a wide range of forefoot, rearfoot, and ankle trauma. In addition, he spent one month in Dresden, Germany learning foot and ankle trauma from one of the most respected Traumatologists in Europe, Professor Hans Zwipp.

Come to our OPEN HOUSE to celebrate that Advanced Foot & Ankle is now The Foot & Ankle Institute. Dr. Leon Reber and Dr. Brad Webb are proud to announce the official name change and would like to invite the entire Cedar City community to come see what our office has to offer.

This event will be fun for the entire family. There will be a bounce house for the kids, cotton candy, popcorn, and drinks. Additionally, you will be able to tour our office and see technology and services we have available at the Foot & Ankle Institute. The Cedar City Chamber of Commerce will also be doing a ribbon cutting at noon.

The Foot & Ankle Institute has been servicing the Southern Utah community since 1981. The Institute has four offices in St. George, Hurricane, Mesquite, now Cedar City. It also houses an extremity MRI unit, Ultrasound, Digital X-rays, and Fluoroscope (Video X-ray). We perform in-office Nerve and Vascular Testing and also offer services through our Sports Medicine Clinic, South Main Surgical Center, Diabetic Foot Center, and Product Center.

Ankle Sprains & Foot Pains Clinic

Typically as summer winds to an end, families look forward to the beginning of school, the approaching fall season, and fall sports!

At the High School level, athletes participate in football, soccer, cross country, golf, and volleyball. Unfortunately, every new season also brings foot and ankle injuries and put athletes on the sidelines--sometimes for weeks longer than the injury warrants.

As this fall approached, our doctors wanted to facilitate a way to examine, treat, and release athletes more efficiently to allow those athletes to get back to full strength and participation.

In that effort we have developed the Ankle Sprains and Foot Pains Clinic.
